Based on this Civil War-era sketch of a soldier's musket ball wound, makeup artists Diane El-Shafey and Pam Oliver created the same effect for a wounded Gabriel Moss...

... and this was taken AFTER Christian cleaned off the additional face wound and most of the blood.
