ARSENIC &
OLD LACE,
a set that
put the "Community" in Community Theatre
Set Designer Peggy Levay conceived the magnificent design
for the Brewster Sisters' late Edwardian parlor (Photo by Jim Poston,
Middleburg, VA).
The HILLSBORO COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION gave permission to
paint the walls of the stage. The painting committee: Peggy Levay,
Stokes Tomlin and Chuck and Meredith McMath. Stenciling and
Tiffany-style "stained glass" window (tissue paper) by Artist Penny
Hauffe. On the left: Desk and standing candelabra provided by Peggy
Levay, phone by Dan Juraschek. Sideboard provided by Marielle Barnes,
dining table by the McMaths, and chairs by Marielle Barnes. The upper
shelf was put up by Stokes Tomlin, who also built a small "back
stair" in the hallway. Shelf pots provided by Peggy Levay. Boar's and
deer head by Lorenzo Bean, center cachepot by Maxine Bean, and the
two golden pheasants by CULPEPER ANTIQUES. Burgundy fabric donated by
Angie Burkhart, portrait provided by Robert and Virginia McMath, sofa
by Pam Oliver, coffee table by Marielle Barnes, coat rack by Peggy
Levay, "window seat" by Megan Irby, and windowseat cover hand-sewn by
Maxine Bean. Properties Master Wanda Juraschek scouted out the
crystal, plates and other hand-held props needed to finish the room.
